My husband spent the better part of last week on the road driving cross-country. After being gone for nearly two weeks, the best thing he brought back from New Hampshire was himself (and of course my mother-in-law!) But he and his mother did bring me back some other nice treasures from along the way.
We all have such happy memories of times spent with his family in New England over the years, Since my mother-in law has now relocated here to Seattle (the reason for last week’s cross-county drive) and we will no longer have reason to visit New Hampshire, this bottle will become a keepsake of sorts. When this is empty, I can refill it indefinitely with home-made syrup. I can’t wait to make his aunt’s moist and flavorful buttermilk pancakes

Have you been to Wall Drug? It is THE must stop on this route. This t-shirt is a wonderful reminder of the stop we made on a care-free, youthful trip my husband and I took together across county during our college years.
My dear mother-in-law picked this up for me in Montana from a place called Deer Lodge.
A humorous little book that’s an ode to the frontier days of old. It includes jokes, fun anecdotes and recipes for fresh butter after milking the cow, sourdough starter, stampede brownies, and a green bean and hamburger casserole that is very similar to a dish that was my favorite growing up!
The sweetest little treasures however are the two five-week old two kittens that made the trip along with them. Abandoned by their mama – a feral barn cat – they are so tiny that they still have to be hand-fed kitten milk with a dropper. But they are getting bigger and changing every day!

Sour Milk Hotcakes
- 1 cup flour
- 1 teaspoon soda
- a pinch of salt
- a little sugar (1-2 Tablespoons)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 egg
- 2 Tablespoons melted butter or veg oil
- buttermilk to thin the batter
Mix dry ingredients. Add butter or oil then mix in the buttermilk slowly until desired consistency. Pour in half cup portions onto heated griddle. Cook a couple of minutes on each side, turning once when bubbles form on uncooked side of pancake.
